Steering System and Suspension System are the 2 main mechanisms to drive our Electric Tricycle. It was essential to test whether they could run properly.
First of all please take a look on the initial testing video of the product. Please note that the tricycle shown in the video was not the final product.
Steering System
Try-and-succeed method was carried out to test the Steering System during our assembly. Two rear wheels were ensured to be in the same horizontal with the front wheel.A teammate then sat on the car and tried to give a turn to it. Yet, it was found that great effort was required to give a turn. This may be due to the fact that length of the holder was too short to give a push. Large torque was thus required to give a turn.
Furthermore, the stainless steel shaft was found to give a high metal-to-metal friction with U-shaped steel, as shown in the picture beside. This rendered it hard to be turned. We were suggested to shorten the holder. Moreover, bearing should be added to the U-shaped steel.
However, we did not have any experience in inserting bearing. Lubricant was finally added instead to smoothen the motion.
Suspension System
Suspension, also known as shock absorbers, is the linkage that connects a vehicle to its wheels. Suspension systems serve a dual purpose which contribute to the car's handling and braking for good active safety and driving pleasure, and keeping vehicle occupants comfortable and reasonably well isolated from vibrations. In order to ensure the system function well, we did a load testing. When load was applied on the system, damping would result. This result was satisfied since our springs inside the system could give an acceptable response to the force adding on them. Normal weight of 70 kg was applied on the system. A push was then given to drive the unassembled tricycle to run on a rough surface.
We did a several tests on it. Results showed that driver could sit on the tricycle firmly and comfortably without falling down and thus could enjoy the journey. The steering system could increase the stability of our tricycle when traveling on a rough road.
